The free Gardening Direct Catalogue offers you a large selection - from old favourites to less common varieties you may not see in the average garden centre. Most of the plants are supplied as ’plug’ or ’ready’ plants. Plug plants, which are supplied at 4-6cm tall in a ’plug’ of compost ready for growing on for a couple of weeks, are ideal for the keen gardener preferring a large number of plants at a lower price each. Bigger ready plants are supplied at about 6-8cm tall and, being more mature, can be planted directly into the garden without growing on - which is useful for those with less time to spare. The Gardening Direct website is easy to use, and is an interesting site to look around, with dozens of handy non-plant products too (one of our favourites being the folding wheelbarrow!); however, you will need to pay for your shopping as you order it, rather than opening an account and purchasing on credit, as is the case with many of the catalogues we list, but we think that’s a small price to pay for such convenience.
