The
Orvis Company was founded over 150 years ago, in 1856, by Charles F. Orvis in Manchester, Vermont, USA, and by 1861 The Orvis Company had established itself as a manufacturer of high-quality, solid wooden fishing rods. Orvis was also becoming noted for its wide selection of flies, and had also started upon a promising mail order business. Charles Orvis was also a co-editor for
Fishing with the Fly, which became one of the best of America’s angling books.
Becoming ever more successful, The Orvis Company expanded far beyond its original locale, and its mail-order catalogue became hugely popular. However, it us not until 1981 that Orvis reaches the UK, when Orvis acquires Dermot Wilson’s UK mail-order fly-fishing business, based at Nether Wallop Mill, and selected fishing beats on the Rivers Test and Itchen. Also in 1981, the 125th company anniversary, Orvis celebrated with limited edition commemorative C. F. Orvis "125" Bamboo Rod. Today, Orvis is probably one of the single biggest UK retailers of its kind.
Orvis opens its first UK retail store in Stockbridge in 1985, and follows this with the opening of its flagship store in London in 1988. As Orvis’ UK presence continues to expand, the Orvis UK website is launched in 2000, with the mail order business continuing to grow in men’s, women’s, gifts, fishing, and shooting collections. More recent additions to the Orvis website include the launch of the Orvis rodfinder, an online search tool that enables you to find fly fishing rods that match UK fish species.
These days the Orvis UK website provides most of the outdoor products and sporting goods you’ll find in any Orvis store, including distinctive country clothing for ladies and gentlemen, Barbour outerwear, luggage, gifts, the world’s best fly-fishing tackle, shooting gear, products for dogs, gifts and much more besides. However, there are a few items that require special handling which cannot currently be ordered via the web.
With over 150 years of experience behind it, you can count on Orvis knowing their products, and you can always be sure of getting both good service and top quality products from Orvis catalogue or direct from the Orvis website. If you don’t already have a printed Orvis catalogue, then they are free to request, and you can do that right from the Orvis website; there are several different catalogues to choose from, including "Fly Fishing", "Men’s" and "Women’s." You should expect to wait just a few days for delivery.
